Xi Meets with UK PM in Beijing after Long Hiatus
Starmer, who arrived in China on Wednesday, said the purpose of the trip is to open new avenues that would bring tangible benefits to the United Kingdom. The visit is the first by a British prime minister since 2018 and takes place against a backdrop of global trade frictions linked to US tariffs, as well as growing strains among Western allies over a range of geopolitical issues, including US ambitions in Greenland.
The British leader is traveling with a delegation of around 60 figures drawn from business, academic, and cultural fields, highlighting London’s interest in broad-based engagement with China.
At the start of their meeting, Xi acknowledged that relations between Beijing and London have experienced “twists and turns” that have not served either side well. He said China is prepared to work toward building a long-term strategic partnership with the UK.
Describing the global environment as “turbulent and fluid,” Xi argued that increased communication between the two countries is essential, whether “for the sake of world peace and stability or for our two countries’ economies and peoples." He also stressed the need for closer cooperation to navigate mounting geopolitical challenges.
Starmer, for his part, emphasized China’s global importance, saying “China is a vital player on the global stage, and it is vital that we build a more sophisticated relationship."
He pointed to the complexity of the current international landscape, noting, “The current international situation is complex and intertwined. As permanent members of the UN Security Council and major global economies, China and the UK need to strengthen dialogue and cooperation,” he said.
Reiterating London’s objectives, Starmer said the UK is pursuing a “more sophisticated relationship” with Beijing. He also underscored the significance of the trip itself, stating, "This is a historic visit, the first by a British prime minister in eight years. We have made this trip because I believe it is strongly in our common interest to find positive ways to work together, and that has been our longstanding position," he said.
